The ISTernship is a summer program for bachelor’s and master’s students seeking expanded research experience. Since 2013, selected participants collaborate closely with faculty or lab members on short research projects. Prospective interns choose a group and agree on a research project with the group leader during the application process.
Upon arrival, ISTerns receive an introduction to research at ISTA and the ISTA Graduate School. The program concludes with a poster session where ISTerns present their work. Internships, conducted in English, last 2-3 months between May 15 and September 15, with dates and length decided with the supervisor.
Eligible candidates are enrolled Bachelor or Master of Science students in good standing, having completed at least the fourth semester of their bachelor’s studies. PhD program students are ineligible. Required documents include CV, statement of purpose, transcripts, and contact info for 1-2 referees.
Benefits include monthly compensation, affordable health insurance, travel cost allowance, on-campus housing (availability varies), and free access to the ISTA shuttle bus to Vienna on business days.
The application period usually opens in mid-December, closing in February. Due to a cyberattack, the 2023 application portal opens in early January, with a deadline on February 15, 2023 (15:00 CET). Updated information will be published on the website.
If you are not from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you will need to apply for a visa in order to legally take up employment and register as a PhD student at ISTA.
When you get an offer from ISTA, you will be sent information on how to apply for your visa from abroad.
